I Gabellieri del Basso Piave

by Enrico Dedin

The three bridges of boats in the “Basso Piave” area are among the last fragments alive of the genius loci. These bridges replaced the oldest fluvial passes between the 1950s and 1960s, while preserving the memory of that ancient rural routes network in the Venetian hinterland, which dates back to the ancient Romans. The ferrymen no longer ferry, they have become “gabellieri”, but they remain their heirs.

In this photo there is Tiziano, «gabelliere» of the Musile di Piave bridge.
